Air Cargo Control Tower & AWB Monitoring

UDB Logistics provides control tower style coordination for commercial air cargo, using AWB milestones, shipment communication and escalation workflows to keep sensitive cargo movements visible. Public SLA and control-tower materials describe response targets, escalation practices and limits that apply to eligible shipments.

What UDB does

  • Monitor AWB and shipment milestones where information is available from carriers, handlers or partners.
  • Track planned and available milestones such as booking/AWB reference, cargo handover, acceptance, uplift/departure, transit or transshipment, arrival, customs/bonded handoff and exception notes where data is available.
  • Coordinate exception communication and escalation between customer, operations and relevant partners.
  • Support sensitive cargo workflows with documented contact and escalation routes.
  • Connect control tower workflows with SLA and high-value security documentation where applicable.

What UDB does not do

  • Guarantee third-party airline, terminal, customs or authority updates in real time.
  • Guarantee transit time, delivery time or uplift unless separately confirmed in writing.
  • Operate as GPS tracking, a carrier system, a customs authority system or a guarantee of real-time third-party data.
  • Replace carrier or authority systems as the legal source of shipment status.

AWB milestone visibility model

AWB monitoring is useful for exception communication and shipment milestones, but it is not the same as GPS tracking or direct control of airline, terminal, customs or authority systems.

MilestoneWhat may be visibleWhat cannot be assumed
Booking / readinessBooking reference, cargo readiness and document handoff status.Booking does not equal final uplift confirmation.
AWB availabilityAWB number or document availability where issued.AWB availability does not mean every third-party system updates in real time.
Airport handoffCargo handover or handler milestone where available.Handoff timing depends on handler/carrier process.
Departure / transitCarrier milestone updates where available.UDB cannot guarantee third-party real-time data.
Arrival / releaseAvailable operational milestone or release-related update.Customs/terminal release is controlled by the relevant authority/operator.
ExceptionDelay, document issue, routing change, security/customs query.Escalation does not guarantee third-party action or outcome.

When AWB control tower support is useful

  • Sensitive cargo where milestone visibility matters.
  • DG, regulated fragrance, electronics or auto parts movements needing exception communication.
  • Bonded/customs-linked cargo with document handoff checkpoints.
  • Shipments where customer teams need structured updates rather than ad hoc messages.
  • B2B movements where multiple internal teams need the same status language.

What AWB control tower support does not replace

  • Airline, terminal, customs or authority systems.
  • Official customs release status.
  • Airline-controlled tracking data.
  • Real-time GPS tracking.
  • Carrier or authority decision-making.
  • Guaranteed uplift, transit or release.

Required documents

  • AWB or booking reference.
  • Customer shipment reference and contact/escalation details.
  • Cargo profile, required milestone events and exception criteria.
  • Milestone scope, reporting cadence, exception contacts and handoff points to monitor.
  • Relevant SLA or account instructions where agreed.

Process

  1. Capture shipment reference, AWB details and milestone expectations.
  2. Define what will be monitored and which third-party updates cannot be guaranteed before the movement starts.
  3. Monitor available updates and communicate exceptions through agreed channels.
  4. Escalate operational issues according to published or agreed service-level workflow.

FAQ

Does UDB provide live AWB tracking?

UDB provides control tower coordination and milestone monitoring where status information is available. It does not replace carrier, terminal, customs or authority systems as official sources.

Are response targets published?

UDB publishes Service Levels (SLA) documents in the Legal Hub. Eligibility, exclusions and remedy limits depend on the applicable document and shipment/account terms.

What AWB milestones can UDB monitor?

UDB can monitor available milestones such as booking/readiness, AWB availability, airport handoff, departure, transit, arrival, release-related updates and exceptions, depending on what carriers, handlers, partners or authorities make available.

Why is AWB monitoring not the same as GPS tracking?

AWB monitoring follows shipment milestones and exception messages. It is not a live GPS feed and does not provide direct control over airline, terminal, customs or authority systems.

What does escalation mean if the issue is controlled by a carrier, terminal or authority?

Escalation means UDB can document the issue, contact the relevant party where a contact path exists, update the customer and track the next checkpoint. It does not guarantee third-party action, release, uplift or a specific outcome.
